How Can I Keep From Singing?

President Hill has asked for a special musical number for Stake High Priest’s Meeting on February 21st.  I thought it would be nice to sing this one and have asked some brethren from the other wards to help me form a double quartet.

This is one of those beautiful old folk-type songs that I heard several years ago. I think I first heard a Pete Seeger arrangement of it and very much liked the song. I am so happy to see this new arrangement from Salley DeFord. It’s just beautiful. The song is a lovely expression of gratitude, joy and hope. Sally tells us that the lyrics seem to have first appeared in “The New York Observer” in the mid-1800s, and the setting by Robert Lowry has since become a favorite standard hymn. I’ve linked the choir arrangement of the music here and below you can click and hear the James Loynes sing it or hear an accompaniment – compliments of Sally DeFord’s site.

They are beautiful. Not only are the harmonizations really nice, but the accompaniment is really beautiful, simple and just lovely.

Accompaniment Track – How Can I Keep From Singing?

My life flows on in endless song
Above earth’s lamentation
I hear the sweet, tho’ far-off hymn
That hails a new creation
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear the music ringing
It finds an echo in my soul
How can I keep from singing?

What tho’ my joys and comfort die?
The Lord my Saviour liveth
What tho’ the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night He giveth
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that Refuge clinging
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

I lift mine eyes; the cloud grows thin
I see the blue above it
And day by day this pathway smoothes
Since first I learned to love it
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart
A fountain ever springing
All things are mine since I am His

I came upon your website by accident. I have emailed Sally deFord and asked her if she ever considered recording the separate SATB parts of her music for people like me who can sing, but cannot site read. I hear what’s correct but must learn by rote. I sing Bass. I listened to your baritone recording which was helpful for me until the baritones and bass’ split.
I know you probably did not intend this for people in another ward in Davis County who is also performing this soon, but really liked your website. Thank you! I wish you would have had the Bass part for How Can I Keep From Singing, but that’s fine. You didn’t do this for me in the first place. Ha ha. Thanks again. Nice work!

If you still need the bass part, I’ll be happy to help you with it.
